Our public school is located in a small town of about 20,000 inhabitants near a larger city, Pescara. The town of Spoltore is booming because the accommodation cost is cheaper than in Pescara and many new immigrant families are now resident here. The population is mainly active in the tertiary sector (services and trade) and many residents work in Pescara. This has turned the town of Spoltore in a residential area with a lack of infrastructures: there are no theaters, libraries nor spaces for young people. The main attraction for teen-agers is a large shopping mall with multiplex cinema. . In Spoltore are residential facilities for children and teen-agers who have been separated from their families (casa-famiglia). Many of these children attend our school and some of them are foreigners. During this school year our institute holds 23 disabled children and others with special educational needs (for ex dyslexia) for a total amount of 5%, about 8% of pupils present a risk of social exclusion because they are immigrant, without family or poor. In our region (Abruzzo) the rate of pupils risking to drop out is higher than national average (18,8%).
Our school takes a large part in cultural and artistic shows and it is among the few to offer afternoon activities for teen agers such as volleyball, rugby, musical instrument and English courses.
We have been working on Comenius projects since 2010 and we consider this new partnership as an opportunity to stengthen and expand our European dimension: it will be a professional developement for teachers and an extraordinary dimension of learning for pupils.
